Polonnaruwa is the medieval capital of Sir Lanka which rose to prominence after the decline of Anuradapura by the invasion of the South Indian Chola kings. Its crowning achievement is the huge man made lake built for the people of Polonnaruwa. A World Heritage Site, the rock fortress of Sigiriya was built in the 1 st century AD. The flat-topped 'Lion Rock' just abruptly 200 meter from the jungle floor. At its base, a surrounding moat and ramparts protects this ancient palace fortress. Inside, the fort has extensive gardens, stone swimming pools with secret passageways, water fountains, stone mirror walls and beguiling hand painter frescoes of the King concubines. |

The Yala National Park covers approximately 1,259 sq km and stretches across the South East of the Island . The park varies in terrain from dense jungle, open parkland , rocky outcrops, waterholes, small lakes and lagoons. It is the largest National Wildlife park in Sri-Lanka. On a safari through the park you would come across Elephants, Leopards, wild Boar, wild Buffaloes, Sloth Bears, Musk Deer, Crocodiles and flurry of both local and migrant birds. |

Kataragama is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the country. It is a holy place for Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims alike, with many shrines and temples devoted to all 3 religions. The maha devale or the main shrine supposedly contains the lance of the six faced, 12- armed Hindu war god - Skanda. Devotees of all 3 religions make offerings during of the 3 daily services or puja's. It is an experience to witness the worshipers feverishly breaking drums and chiming bells as the holy processions enters the sanctum sanctorum during prayer services. |
